Badger Books have come to Glendale!

What is a Badger Book? It is an electronic poll book. They are used to check in voters, print voter numbers, enter registrations, and record absentee voters.

These electronic poll books work the same as paper poll books and registration forms. For instance, just as a voter would sign the paper poll book to get a voter number in order to get a ballot, the voter will sign the Badger Book. The election inspector will still look up the voters’ names in the poll book, voters will still sign the poll book, and voters will still get a voter number. The only difference is that all of this will be done electronically using the Badger Books.

The actual process of voting does not change at all. Voters still vote on paper ballots and still place those ballots in the tabulator. The tabulator is not connected to the Badger books in any way.

The Badger Books are not connected to the internet or to any other outside source. They are connected to a server through a router within each polling place that allows the books to talk to each other. They communicate only with each other.

The Badger Books will be used at City of Glendale polling places for the General Election.

Fall Leaf Collection

The City of Glendale will pick up leaves beginning mid October through November 2022 (contingent upon the weather) provided the following procedures are followed:

1. Leaves raked to the curb, gutter, and road shoulder areas by November 13th will be collected by the City of Glendale Department of Public Works.

2. Leaves placed on the City right-of-ways for City pickup should be raked in long narrow piles that are within reach of the leaf vacuum tube.

3. Piles should not extend into traffic lanes, thereby creating traffic hazards.

4. Leaves should not be placed around obstacles such as mailbox posts, sign posts and light poles.

5. Crews will not pick up leaves mixed with debris, logs, branches, rocks, plastic, metal or glass containers, or any other type of refuse.

6. Leaves should not be placed on City cul-de-sacs, vacant land or City property except on the public right-of-way along the curb and gutter, and road shoulder areas.

Roadways with Curbs and Gutters:
Leaves should be placed on the pavement on the roadside of the curb. To prevent street flooding, do not place leaves on top of storm sewer grates.

Roadways with Shoulders:
Leaves should be placed on the shoulder of the road and not extend into the roadway.

Roadways with Ditches:
Leaves should be placed no farther than 4 feet from the edge of the pavement, but in no event shall they extend into the water flow line of the ditch.

Alley Collection:
Leaf collection will not be made from "dead end" or "no outlet" alleys.

WARNING: Drivers should be alert from children playing in leaf or brush piles.

Burning Leaves, Yard Waste, Etc. Prohibited!

Glendale Ordinance 5-2-7 (g) prohibits the burning of leaves, brush, wood, yard waste, and other vegetative debris.

Open fires can be a significant source of pollution. According to the Wall Street Journal, a single pit can, in one evening, emit as much fine-particulate pollution as "one heavy-duty diesel truck driving 564 miles." Bring your leaves to the edge of the street for collection.

Sanitary Sewer Backup

If you experience a basement sanitary sewer backup on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., call (414) 228-1710. If you experience a backup after hours or on weekends, please call the Glendale Police Department's non-emergency number at (414) 228-1753. The Police Department will contact a Public Works employee to investigate the problem.

Collection of Refuse

Per City of Glendale Ordinance 8-3-6, all garbage carts shall be placed at the curbside collection point only after 4:00 PM on the evening prior to the regular collection time. All refuse carts must be removed from the curbside collection point within twenty-four (24) hours after the regular collection time.

As Fall Turns to Winter

By: Battalion Chief Dan Tyk, North Shore Fire/Rescue

We definitely don’t want to admit it, but winter will be here before we know it. Besides the chapped lips and dry air, we also need to prepare for the cold. Before the cold strikes, follow these important tips to ensure you and your family are ready for what lies ahead:

  • Have your furnace and any alternative heating equipment inspected by a trusted professional to ensure it is ready and operational for the winter weather.
  • Take a look outside the home to be sure that your air intakes and exhausts are free from any leaves or other debris that may have collected there.
  • Before you fire up your furnace for the first time this season, be sure there is at least three feet of clearance on all sides. The same is true for any fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heaters.
  • If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, be sure to have the chimney inspected and cleaned prior to your first fire of the season.
  • Be sure to have carbon monoxide and smoke alarms on every level of your home, and near each sleeping area. Alarms should be tested monthly and replaced per manufacturer recommendations (usually every seven to ten years).

North Shore Fire/Rescue can help residents with recommendations surrounding home heating, as well as many other home safety topics as part of our FREE Home Safety Assessment Program.  To schedule an assessment, visit our website: www.nsfire.org and click the “How Do I?” option followed by the “Schedule a Home Safety Assessment” link.  A member of our Community Risk Reduction Staff will reach out to schedule a visit.
