Dear Glendale Residents:
Over the weekend, the city administrator and I went around the city to survey what John’s Disposal has been able to pick up, and how much is still remaining. John’s added additional trucks over the weekend, but some neighborhoods were hit so hard that a couple of houses filled a truck entirely. At this rate, it could take a month to six weeks to get rid of all the debris.
Yesterday morning, we met at city hall with the public works director and slightly modified our action plan. We have reassigned a number of city public works employees. They are using a front-end loader, two city dump trucks, and other City equipment to gather large piles of debris and bring it to another site.
The City’s crews will not be able to grab everything, but large items will be scooped up. We are also being mindful to not destroy people’s front yards as we pick up debris this way. The City’s crews are not waste collectors, and we are being careful not to cause any additional damage. Smaller items may be left behind for John’s to pick up as they continue their work across the city this week. If you see large chucks of debris in front of your house removed this way, feel free to consolidate piles of smaller items to assist the John’s Disposal workers as they come through behind us throughout the week.
Beginning today, Milwaukee County Department of Transportation is assigning an additional front-end loader and four dump trucks to Glendale to assist our efforts.
I also want to add that you will see some other city maintenance items be passed over for the next week or so. For example, you might not see grass mowing at the park or in other rights-of-way, since those employees have been reassigned to flood cleanup. We are prioritizing the cleanup of flood debris over everything else. Thanks to everyone in advance for your patience.
Bryan Kennedy, Ph.D.
Mayor
